Masterfully restored 15th-century castle located 90 minutes from Bordeaux and 30 minutes from Bergerac International Airport

New York, New York (November 6, 2020) — Chateau de Lauzun, dating back to 1450, is a rarity of built art. Graciously restored by expert craftsmen to honor its historic integrity while welcoming modern living, the careful renovation includes floor tiles from Avignon, authentic hand-blown glass windows from the masters of Saint-Gobain and majestic marble fireplaces. Modern additions are a grand chef’s kitchen framed by a glazed gothic arch and a stunning stone swimming pool complete with underground filter room and filtration system. The 6,500-square-foot estate with 10 bedrooms and six baths is officially classified as a “Monument Historique.”

The castle was originally constructed in the mid-15th century by the Caumont aristocracy and continued in three phases. In 1723, the dukedom and the castle were passed onto the Gontaut-Baron family, with whom it remained until 1807. One member of that family, Duc Armand Louis de Gontaut, fought alongside George Washington at the Siege of Yorktown in 1781. He was later executed during the French Revolution but was then immortalized with an inscription on the Arc de Triomphe, which honors those who fought and died in the French and Napoleonic Wars.

Chateau de Lauzun is represented by Anthony Mackle of Maxwell-Baynes Real Estate, the exclusive Affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate in Bordeaux, France.

Highlights include:

  • The Medieval Chateau, the first of the three structures built in 1450, includes a drawing room, dining room, kitchen, living room, office and huge wine cellar along with six bedrooms and four bathrooms. This section of the estate has been restored with modern conveniences to marry up with the original features.
  • The Renaissance Chateau was built in 1570 and consists of the magnificent Great Hall with two ornate historical monument fireplaces, a parlor, two baths and a chapel, now a two-bedroom apartment but easily returned to its former glory. There are also the King’s and Duke’s bed chambers, massive multi-room suites and the royal sleeping quarters that could also be converted into a grand dining room, a billiards room or a space for social functions.
  • The New Pavilion was built in the 17th century to connect the Medieval and Renaissance Chateaux. This section has various rooms, including a professional kitchen to enable event catering, a library and gymnasium.
  • The Guardian’s Lodge, with a sitting room, kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom, sits at the main entrance and is perfect for staff quarters or guest accommodations.
  • There is also a large two-story barn, which could be re-imagined for myriad uses.
  • A lovely park with various tree species lies at the south end of the chateau.
  • A four-hectare parcel of land surrounds the chateau on all sides, with two regal gates providing access.
